1. Where can I buy a Go Rider card and bus fares?
Go Rider cards and fares are sold at selected ticket agents – Click here to find the one closest to you or call Maxx on 09 366 6400. Go Rider adult and child fares can be topped up on the bus--top--

2. How much does a Go Rider card cost?
You’ll pay a one-off non-refundable fee of $10 for your Go Rider card. You can then top up your choice of fare onto it. We recommend keeping your Go Rider card receipt and User Guide and writing your card serial number on your User Guide. This will be useful if your card is lost or stolen. --top--

3. What fare options does Go Rider offer?
You have the choice of three different fare options:

  • multi journey (10 rides)
  • zone passes (monthly or weekly)
  • stored value

4. What is a multi journey fare?
Multi journey fares offer you multiple rides at a discount for a specified number of stages. If you make the same trip frequently, it will be cheaper for you to top up with 10 rides rather than pay single trip cash fares. You can top up to 40 rides at a time (in blocks of 10) on your Go Rider card. Multi journey fares are available for adult fares, child fares and tertiary student fares.--top--

5. What is a monthly or weekly zone pass?
Zone passes entitle the holder to unlimited travel on certain bus services within a specific zone over a certain time period. You can top up your Go Rider with a weekly pass (7 days) or a monthly pass. Your weekly pass starts from the day you first use it on the bus and is valid for 7 consecutive days (weekly pass). Your monthly pass starts from the day you first use it and is valid for a month – i.e. if you first use your monthly pass on the 7 August, it will be valid until 11.59 on 6 September. If you are a regular traveler, weekly and monthly passes are a convenient and good value way to pay for your bus fare. Monthly passes are available for Zone A, Zone B or All Zones - click here for a description of the zones. A weekly pass is only avaliable for All Zones.

6. Can I load more than one weekly pass onto my Go Rider at the same time?
Yes you can load a maximum of 2 weekly passes onto your Go Rider. --top--

7. What is stored value?
Stored value allows you to top up an amount of money on your Go Rider card. You can top up your Go Rider card with a minimum of $10 and up to a maximum of $100 (in multiples of $10). The cost of your bus fare is deducted from your Go Rider card each time you make a bus trip. This saves you the hassle of carrying cash and you will also receive a 10% discount off the single trip cash fare. --top--

8. Where can I top up my Go Rider card?
You can top up fares onto your Go Rider card either at a bus ticket agent or on the bus (cash only).

Note: You’ll get a $5 discount when topping up passes at a ticket agent, and tertiary fares can only be topped up at ticket agents (not on the bus) with a valid Student ID card with MAXX Student ID sticker from an approved tertiary institution.--top--

9. Is there a minimum or maximum number of multi journey rides that I can top up at one time?
Yes, you can top up a minimum of 10 rides and a maximum of 40 rides (in multiples of 10 rides). --top--

10. How do I use my Go Rider card on the bus?
When you board the bus, simply insert your Go Rider card into the electronic ticketing machine next to the driver, and clearly tell the driver which fare option you would like deducted. A ticket will be issued to you, which also shows your remaining balance on your Go Rider card. --top--

11. Which buses accept Go Rider?
Your Go Rider card is accepted on all Metrolink,GO WEST, North Star or Waka Pacific buses. LINK buses also accept Go Rider cards for adult fares only. --top--

12. What if my Go Rider card is lost or stolen?
If you lose a Go Rider card that has been topped up with a weekly or monthly pass , we are able to replace it providing you do the following:

  • Click here to report the card as lost or stolen or alternatively you can call NZ Bus on 09 373 9118.
  • Come into the NZ Bus head office at 100 Halsey St, Viaduct Harbour with a receipt that shows the expiry date of your monthly zone pass and pay a $10 administration fee . An expiry date is needed to transfer your remaining balance to a new Go Rider card.
  • Note: We cannot replace the multi journey rides or stored value loaded on a Go Rider card. However, if your Go Rider card is registered and you have contacted us to let us know your card has been lost and it is found and handed into us, we will return it to you.

13. What if my Go Rider card is faulty?
In the unlikely event that the computer chip in your card fails, your bus driver will take your card so it can be returned to our customer services team for processing. Your bus driver will then provide you with a Temporary 2 Day Travel Pass which will entitle you to two consecutive days of free travel on any North Star, Metrolink, LINK, GO WEST or Waka Pacific bus service.

If your card is split or damaged you will be required to purchase a replacement card for a fee of $10. --top--

14. What happens if my Go Rider card is broken?
If your card is broken, it can be replaced for a cost of $10. Simply call customer services on 09 373 9118 to arrange a replacement. --top--

15. How can I tell how much stored value I have left on my card?
The amount of stored value left on your Go Rider card is displayed on your bus ticket. --top--

16. How can I tell when my monthly (or weekly) pass runs out?
The expiry date of your pass is displayed on your bus ticket when you use your Go Rider card. --top--

17. How can I tell how many rides I have left on my card?
Your last bus ticket will display how many rides you have left. --top--

18. Why can’t I top up tertiary multi journey fares on my Go Rider card on the bus?

19. My Go Rider is loaded with 10 rides for 1 Stage but I want to travel 2 stages, can I use my Go Rider?
Yes, just tell the driver where you want to go to. If you want to travel 2 stages but your Go Rider card is topped up with 1 stage rides, two 1 stage rides will be deducted from the total rides on your card. --top--

20. Can more than one person travel on the same Go Rider card?
Go Rider cards are designed for use by an individual, however in an emergency if you are traveling with a friend they can pay for your bus fare with their Go Rider card by putting it in the electronic ticketing machine a second time after they have paid for their bus fare. --top--

21. Can I use my Go Rider card on the LINK?
Yes, Go Rider cards can be used to pay for adult fares on the LINK in addition to Metrolink, North Star, Go West and Waka Pacific. Note that there are no child or tertiary fares available on the LINK. --top--

22. Does it cost to top up a Go Rider card?
No it is free to top up your Go Rider card. You only pay the cost of the bus fare that you are topping up on your card.--top--

23. Can I top up more than one type of fare on my Go Rider at the same time, eg: a monthly pass and stored value?
Yes you can top up a multi journey pass & stored value at the same time. Your Go Rider card cannot be topped up with stored value and monthly or weekly passes at the same time. --top--
